After oil leaks in Bohai Bay last year, twenty-nine fishermen have sued China National Offshore Oil Corp. for $34 million. These fishermen have suffered heavy economic damage after oil spread to 336 square miles of the bay. Although the oil field has since been closed, the damage done of the fishermen's clams and sea cucumbers remains. China National Offshore has asked the Ministry of Civil Affairs to begin a maritime environmental protection fund and China's oceanic agency has also ordered that the company do more to clean up the environment as well as make changes to prevent this from happening again.
