15 Indian Hostages Released After 3-Day Scene with Somali Pirates

Fifteen Indian hostages were finally released by Somali pirates after a dramatic 3-day scene on the Indian Ocean. A group of pirates were holding the hostages aboard a hijacked dhow when they decided to also attack a Dutch "fall-pipe" vessel, the M/V Flinststone. The pirates launched skiffs to attack the M/V Flintstone and a gun fight broke out among the vessel's armed security detail and the pirate attackers. Several pirates were injured in the fight and were forced to retreat back to the dhow.
The pirates were unaware that the EUNAVFOR warship FGS LUEBECK was nearby. The warship quickly responded to the scene, located the dhow mothership and demanded that the pirates comply with their orders via radio. The FGS LUEBECK deployed a helicopter to fire warning shots after the pirates ignored the calls, but the pirates still resisted and threated to harm the Indian hostages. Two days later, a hijacked Italian tanker with 18 hostages, the M/V ENRICO LEVOLI, rendezvoused with the Indian dhow and the pirates again threatened to harm the hostages if any military action was taken to prevent the transfer of injured pirates.
The pirates made the transfer to the M/V ENRICO LEVOLI and returned back to Somalia, and the forces aboard the warship FGS LUEBECK were able to board the indian dhow and recover the 15 hostages. This is yet another reminder of the increasing danger of modern-day piracy. Maritime workers and offshore employees are subjected to this danger whenever their vessel takes to the high seas.
