Shipboard LNG Tanks a Possibility
Lloyd's Register, the global marine risk organization, held a meeting to discuss the benefits and possibility of storing LNG tanks on vessels safely. LNG stands for Liquefied Natural Gas and is said to be much safer and easier to transport than regular natural gas. Lloyd's Register is stating that LNG storage tanks will be especially helpful for cruise ships, containerships, and ferries that have less space for storage.
Opponents to the idea are calling into question its safety, but Lloyd's Register representatives are saying that it is "undoubtedly" possible to incorporate these tanks below the shipboard safely. The example of submarines was used. Submarines have been using similar technology for near 60 years, often with even fewer safety measures than would be employed with the new LNG tank storage proposal.
The last thing to consider would be the cost it would take to implement this plan. Lloyd's Register is claiming that it's worth it and that we are certainly capable of engineering it. They agree that safety is the first priority when it comes to maritime safety, but they are also pushing for innovation in the field. Everyone is hoping that this new goal-based approach will enable advancement in addition to safety in the field.
Marine manufacturers are trying to come up with new ways to be efficient with their vessels, hopefully not at the risk of safety. Storing any type of gas below deck carries with it the risk of explosions and fires, so this new type of storage, even if it is deemed safe, is subject to error and can cause an offshore accident.
