Accident Forces Petrobras to Shut Down Oil Well
Petrobras is Brazil's state-controlled oil producer, and recently it was forced to shut down its fifth most productive oil well because of a leak that was detected deep down in the Atlantic Ocean. The leak caused about 160 barrels of oil to escape into the ocean. This particular well typically produces close to 25,000 barrels a day according to the country's oil regulator. The leak has been stopped and at this time the spill is contained, but the company still is unsure of the cause of the accident.
The leak was caused by some malfunction in the well's equipment, which could have also caused injury to the employees who worked on it. Although no injuries were recorded in this case, it is not uncommon for workers to face dangerous accidents in similar cases.
