U.S. Coast Guard Issues Explosives Safety Guide
The United States Coast Guard recently published an Explosives Safety Guide after a commercial fishing vessel dredged up 1- old munitions canisters (circa 1914) that contained mustard gas. While the canisters were being brought on board, one broke open and exposed four crewmembers to the gas. Mustard gas is also known as Sulfur Mustard, and was a chemical weapon developed and used during World War 1. The crewmembers who were exposed experienced chemical burns and respiratory problems and the boat was required be decontaminated.
This recent incident brought to mind the age-old problem of incidental discovery of munitions at sea during fishing, scuba diving and other activities. Even though these incidents don't occur often, their impact can be catastrophic. Any discovery, handling or landing of any unknown weaponry or components onboard vessels must be treated with extreme caution and care. For this reason, the U.S. Army Technical Center for Explosive Safety provides a Maritime Industry 3Rs Explosives Safety Guide online and recommends for any persons involved with commercial fishing industries and similar activities to review and study the report.
