Types of Back Injuries
Different Types of Back Injuries
Maritime workers are at a great risk for receiving back injuries because their jobs often require manual labor of heavy machinery. Offshore workers may injure their backs lifting heavy objects or because of a fall accident. Whatever the cause, back injuries are serious, so it is important that you understand the different types.
There are two main types of back injuries:
- Spondylolisthesis- This type of back injury occurs when a vertebra is displaced. These slips most commonly occur in the lumbar spine. Spondylolisthesis can also involve fractures, sometimes called a hamgman's fracture.
- Cervical Radiculopathy- This type of back injury is another name for a herniated disk which puts pressure on the nearby nerves in the back, causing pain. You may feel sharp pain or numbness in the lower half of your body if you have sustained this type of injury.
It is possible you may be suffering from a back sprain or strain as well. These types of injuries damage the muscles and tendons of the back and sometimes stretch or tear ligaments. You may be suffering from pain which increases with motion, muscle cramps and spasms, or reduced range of motion. In some types of back injuries, the spinal column may become fractured. Extreme trauma to the vertebrae in your back can even paralyze parts of your body.
